Early Days of Australian Horse Racing
Like all long-standing sports events, there will be stories that many will call legendary, and the legend of the Melbourne Cup starts with the arrival of the first horse racing fleet in Australia in 1788.
The Australian wilderness has no wild horses. All horses bred in Australia mostly came from the early ancestors who made landfall in 1788. The first fleet of horses was composed of a stallion, four mares, a filly, and a colt. This marks the beginning of horse racing in Australia.
In 1835, the early settlers of present-day Melbourne set up the first horse tracks. Friendly horse races started quickly after the tracks were built and friendly wagers were and paid with bottle of rum. The first race tracks were located in bullock carts, which are makeshift tracks sufficient enough to hold a decent horse race. Soon enough, horse races were moved to Fleming Town. The first official horse race was held on this new race track we now call as Flemington Racecourse. The Victoria Horse Club was the first major horse club that envisioned a great horse race that will cater to many people. The first Thursday of November in 1861 became the day for the first ever Melbourne Cup.
The Legend of Archer
The inaugural Melbourne Cup was a success. Seventeen of the best horses in the region participated in the race and won by a stallion named Archer. Archer instantly became a celebrity in the region and he went on to win the second Melbourne Cup. Legend has it that Archer had to walk over 500 miles of rough road from his stable in Terara, New South Wales to join the race. This story became a symbol of what these great horses have to go through to be able to compete in the Melbourne Cup.

The Loving Cup Trophy
The Loving Cup Trophy is the competition’ top prize. This trophy is an icon in Australian sports and one of the most coveted trophies in horse racing. The current design is an 18 carat gold trophy valued at AUD125,000. The Loving Cup Trophy is also a symbol for Australia’s culture and history, stirring emotions from people all over the country.
The evolution of the Loving Cup represents the development of Australia from a country of colonies to a strong-willed nation. The first cup was designed by James Smeeth in 1919. The design of the trophy was tasked to Smeeth with the vision to create a trophy that will highlight the prestige of the race. The design eventually became a national icon as we know it today. The old process used in crafting the Loving Cup is still adopted today. The current design of the trophy includes 34 pieces of gold metal carefully hand-beaten and shaped for over 200 hours.
Melbourne Cup Results – Early Winners
The Melbourne Cup has seen a succession of proud winners starting with the legendary Archer. Archer not only became the first horse to win the Melbourne Cup but also became the first multiple winner in cup history. Archer defeated the Victorian champion named Mormon by six lengths. Archer could have won for the third straight time if not for a technicality that scratched him off the list of competitors.
In 1876, three-year-old Briseis became the first filly to win the Melbourne Cup with a time of 3.36.25. She also won the Victoria Racing Club Derby and the Victoria Racing Club Oaks in the same year. Briseis was ridden by the youngest jockey ever to win the Melbourne cup. Peter St. Albans was just 12 years and 318 days old when he and Briseis won the Cup.
The Melbourne Cup results also witnessed the legend of Phar Lap. Phar Lap is considered by many as the greatest horse of all time. Days before the 1930 Melbourne Cup, Phar Lap escaped an attempt to shoot him. He went on to win the Melbourne Stakes at the day of the shooting and won the Melbourne Cup three days later as an odds-on 11/8 favourite.
The first aboriginal jockey to win the Melbourne Cup was Frank Reys in 1973. Although he acknowledged his Filipino background, Reys hid his aboriginal roots because of fear that admitting his heritage would hinder his prospects. Reys’ maternal grandmother was from the Djiribul people of Northern Queensland.
The Dominance of Makybe Diva
The last decade saw an increasing number of foreign-trained horses successfully competing in the Melbourne Cup. The new “quality handicap” weighing system attracted foreign competitors to join what was once a locally-dominated race. The addition of foreign competitors allowed the Melbourne cup to gain more interest globally.
Makybe Diva made Melbourne Cup results history when she won the race for the third straight time in 2005. She was the only horse to win the cup three times and the only mare to win the cup multiple times. Her 2005 finish was considered the greatest finish in Melbourne Cup history.
The Melbourne Cup is not only a race of the best in Australian horse racing, but also a celebration of Australian history and culture.
